Therapists often experience considerable stress due to their large caseloads, the seemingly intractable problems of their clients, and workplace challenges. These stressors have all been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress in the helping professions is inevitable, even under the best of circumstances, but emotional burnout is not, and the ability of a “burned out” therapist to help their clients is greatly diminished. One way therapists can avoid burnout is by utilizing flow.
Flow, as defined by the psychologist Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is a state that occurs when your skill level and the challenge at hand are equal, and research has shown that people are often at their most creative, productive, and happiest when they are in that state of flow. In this workshop, you will learn how to achieve flow more often and how to integrate it with your therapeutic practice. This application of flow, in turn, will help you avoid professional burnout.
In this workshop, you will get a chance to learn:
The characteristics of flow
The research between happiness and flow
How flow helps therapists avoid burnout
How you can achieve a flow state more consistently
Some of the activities you can expect are:
Lectures with peer received research
Open group discussions
Journaling
Small group discussions
